Belinda McPhee Talks Employee Experience & Auto-UX

This week, Auto-UX CEO and Founder Greg Parkes talks to Belinda McPhee, HR Consulting Director at TSHR, about the role novated leasing can play in the Employee Experience.

Tell us about Trak HR?

Well firstly, I want to make it clear that Greg is my husband, that Auto-UX is one of my clients, and Trak HR is one of Auto-UX’s clients! So while it’s fair to say that some of my responses in this interview may be biased, those that know me will also know that I don’t tend to pull punches and am very comfortable calling things as I see them. (Greg nods with a smile).

Trak HR is an HR consultancy specialising in Board Advisory as well as HR strategy development and execution for SMEs through to multi-nationals in a range of sectors. I founded Trak HR with my business partner Gary Connell in 2011 and we’ve been helping organisations with all areas of HR since that time.

Why did you get involved with Auto-UX?

Aside from the fact that I am involved by default, I believe that novated leasing is an important benefit for employees and employers, but I see a lot of dissatisfaction out there with various suppliers. It seems to me that the industry is complacent and takes its customers for granted.

Greg, and the team he has assembled, are passionate advocates of the employee experience and of leveraging technology to deliver that experience. I think there is an opportunity to make a difference and have an impact, and I’d like to be a part of that.

Do you have a novated lease yourself?

Yes. Every car I have owned for the last 20 years has been on a novated lease.

What do you value most about a novated lease?

Two things. Firstly, the discounts I have received over the years on car purchasing and running costs, and of course the significant tax effectiveness of having the expenses come out of pre-tax salary. But secondly and perhaps just as important to me is the convenience. Life is busy and I don’t have the time or patience to juggle all the ins and outs of car expenses, compliance and tax reporting. I love the fact that everything is taken care of and I don’t need to think about it.

What are the business benefits of novated leasing?

Novated leasing is a great tool to help employees maximise their remuneration package. It is not always possible to increase salaries, but salary packaging a car can greatly reduce the overall cost of car ownership for staff. Aside from the financial aspect, if employees have a great customer experience with their novated lease, this can strengthen positive association with your company/brand. Conversely if the experience isn’t so great, it can have the opposite effect.

Employee Experience

Is a novated leasing program going to increase your ability to attract and retain staff like is often claimed? I am not convinced. But if you can deliver an amazing customer experience for employees on their novated lease, coupled with great execution of broader HR strategy, then I do think this can have a positive effect on the employee experience which in turn drives better business performance.

What should employers look for in a novated lease program?

Any provider you implement to service your employees is an extension of your brand, so it is important to make sure there is values alignment. I’d say that customer service responsiveness is paramount, systems and processes are robust to eliminate overheads, and that there is good value for money in the overall offering.
